Facts About Flying Fish That You Need to Know

Have you ever seen flying fish on a television show, or maybe you've seen it yourself while traveling to the sea? Flying fish or scientifically called torani fish belong to the Exocoetidae family. They can be found in warm seas, especially around the equator This Torani fish has a body shape like a torpedo. The two wings are located on the chest. The tail of this fish will help move faster when in the air or in the water.

They usually prey on plankton, marine plants, and small organisms such as crustaceans. Some even prey on other small fish. The predators of this fish are tuna, octopus, and dolphins. Flying over the water is a form of defense from predators.

In fact, flying fish don't really fly like birds or bats. To be precise, they simply “floated” in the air for a rather long time. The strong thrust of the tail will make these flying fish soar into the air, after which their unique fins unfold. Flying fish have very wide and webbed front and rear fins, similar to wings.

While in the air, the Torani fish can move its tail up to 70 times per second. This unique body shape is used to accelerate the pace when being chased by predators, whether in the air or in the water However, unlike bird wings, when the fins of flying fish are stretched, they cannot flap. And it only serves to catch the wind, so that they stay in the air for as long as possible. The principle is almost the same as a kite.

This flying fish can be in the air for 45 seconds with a height of about 1 meter. Before emerging to the surface of the water, this fish travels at a speed of 37 miles per hour. When the speed is reached, the Torani fish will jump into the air.

They usually glide for 50 to 200 meters while in the air. Some even reach the furthest distance of 400 meters. This is done to escape from predators. In the years 1900 to 1930, this fish became the object of study which made it possible to become a prototype of aircraft design.

It is estimated that there are about 40 species of the flying fish around the world. There are fish species that have two wings, and some have four. Fish with double wings usually measure between 18-30 cm long, while fish with four wings can reach a length of 38 cm.

This fish is often found in tropical and subtropical oceans such as the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. They are more commonly found in the Caribbean Sea. One of the islands called Barbados is dubbed "The land of flying fish" which means the land of flying fish.

Torani fish are often caught for commercialization in various countries, including Indonesia. Fortunately, the number of fish that are classified as large does not make Torani fish one of the rare fish. This fish can be eaten, even in Japan it is cooked as a sushi ingredient called "tobiko".

The breeding season occurs when the sea currents are at their weakest, usually between December and June. Fish will form one large group, and during this breeding season the number per group can exceed one million.

Female Torani fish will lay their eggs near the surface of the water, either on seaweed or other objects. Flying fish that are still small look like marine plants, this is useful in order to avoid predators. Usually, Torani fish have a life span of about 5 years.
