Get to Know About Marlin

Marlin fish or sori fish are fish from the Istiophoridae family which has about 10 species. This fish has an elongated body, long stiff dorsal fins and a spear-like snout. Marlin fish are fast swimmers that can reach speeds of about 80 km / h. Marlin uses his spear-shaped jaws to catch food. They eat crustaceans, tuna and squid. The average size of a marlin tends to be in the 11-foot range and weighs 200 to 400 pounds.

Marlin can be found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Marlins are called blue water fish, spending most of their lives deep in the sea. They love to migrate, and will follow warm ocean currents for hundreds or even thousands of miles.

Marlin is a solitary creature, they swim in pairs. Very rarely, they gather in larger groups. Marlin fish are also very active and strong animals, they like to jump out of the water. Marlin mating season occurs in late summer or early fall. The female is capable of laying eggs 4 times per single breeding season, releasing up to 7 million eggs. Only a small percentage of the eggs released (less than 1%) will survive, as most of the eggs will be eaten by other sea creatures. The average lifespan of a female Marlin is 27 years in the wild. While the male Marlin will live much shorter, around 18 years.

The following are types of sori fish or marlin fish:

1. Black Marlin (Makaira indica)

This fish can be found in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Located in water with a temperature of 21-30 degrees Celsius and is rarely found in cold waters. This fish can be quickly identified because it is the only marlin that has a stiff dorsal fin. This fin cannot be folded into the body. The dorsal line is rarely as visible as in adult fish.

its back is dark blue which immediately changes color to white on the back line. If you are jumping or eating, you will see a faint blue line on the side. The diet consists of cuttlefish, mackerel, bonito, flying fish.

2. Blue Marlin (Makaira nigircan)

Makaira indica

This fish lives in warm waters. This fish is not like the black marlin is also found in the Atlantic Ocean, which is in the tropics of the ocean. The characteristic of this fish is that its pectoral fins are never stiff, even when it is dead it can still be folded into its body. The dorsal fin is high and sharp, the height is more than the width of the fish's body. The tail fin is large and sharp. This type of fish includes an aggressive fighter who often jumps into the air, as if tireless. They swim fast and strong.

3. White Marlin (Tetrapturus albidus)

Tetrapturus albidus

This fish is found in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea and also in the Mediterranean Sea in Europe. This fish can migrate to tropical waters. And often close to the beach. The most prominent feature is the dorsal, pectoral and tail fins that are round rather than sharp. The pectoral fins can be bent so that they are close to the body. The side lines are very clear. The color of this fish is closer to green than other marlins.

4. Swordfish (Xiphias galduys Linnaeus)

Xiphias galduys Linnaeus

This fish is very long, straight and wide. Lives at a temperature of 13 to 22 degrees Celsius. This fish is found in almost all waters on the earth's surface.

The easiest feature is a sharp antenna that resembles a sword. This sword is used to defend or kill, attacking its prey. Its food includes other marlins in the form of cuttlefish, dolphins, and mackerel. The back can be dark brown, bronze, metallic purple, grayish blue or completely black. The sides can be dark, and the underside is white.

Remember! Friends, you have to be careful with these marlin fish, because at the beginning of 2020 yesterday there was a case of a teenager whose neck was stuck with a marlin fish when he wanted to catch it.

Quoted from bbc.com The 75cm long marlin was gliding fast from the sea and its pointed snout pierced its neck when the 16-year-old turned on his flashlight.

It's terrible isn't it?

This is our explanation

Hope it is useful
